Tomo Matsuyama (Matzu MTP)
MATZU-MTP interprets the contemporary street art movement by
applying Japanese techniques and sensibility to his large-scale
paintings through brush strokes and iconographies, as well as color
palette and the use of negative space. He is alone in his ability to
explore the edges of cultural identity. His works flirt with the
boundary between traditional Japanese art and urban American street
influences. And he pursues that inspiration with tremendous exuberance
and a fresh design language that's filled with human emotion. He has
held solo exhibitions at Levi's SoHo Gallery and The Reed Space (both
in NYC) and the Hankyu Department Store in Osaka, Japan. He has shown
in group exhibitions at the Asian American Arts Centre (NYC), Lab 101
(LA) and Start Soma (SF), among many others. This year, MATZU-MTP
curated and participated in The Shift Exhibition at Supreme Trading in
Brooklyn. He has been featured in The New York Times, Village Voice,
OCS News, amNewYork, Daily Sun, Vapors, Transworld Snowboarding, Dazed
and Confused,Art Asia Pacific, Relax, +81and Eye On Fine Art.
